Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.\u00a0And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up\u2026 \u201c (James 5:14,15)<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>If healing is not always God\u2019s will, why did James tell the sick person to ask for prayer and why did he commission the elders to pray?<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 You could say \u201cWell, the elders can pray and see what happens. If the sick person gets healed, it was the will of God, if not, it wasn\u2019t. But, no, James is very certain! He says \u201cthe prayer of faith <em>will<\/em> save the one who is sick, and the Lord <em>will<\/em> raise him up\u201d. How could he be so sure?\u00a0<span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\">Because James knew the will of God concerning the matter. He didn\u2019t say \u201cmaybe, the Lord will raise him up\u201d. Or \u201csometimes, the Lord raises them up.\u201d He was confident in his statement. So, what can be the variable in the above quoted verses? From Scripture we know that with God there is \u201cno variableness, neither shadow of turning\u201d. God consistently keeps His Word. So, the variable can only be \u201cthe prayer of faith\u201d. If the elders pray the prayer of faith, the Lord \u201cwill save the one who is sick\u201d with absolute certainty. If the sick person stayed sick, the prayer of faith hasn\u2019t been prayed yet. The \u201cLord, if it be thy will\u201d prayers are not prayers of faith. John says it very clearly:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u201cAnd this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.\u00a0And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.\u201d (1. John 5:14,15)<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 If you don\u2019t know the will of God concerning a matter, you can\u2019t pray with confidence. Even if the thing you\u2019re asking for is God\u2019s will, but if you don\u2019t know it, you won\u2019t have confidence (aka faith) in your prayer. You\u2019re just shooting up a prayer and hoping for the best. That\u2019s not faith. You\u2019re supposed to know that God hears you and that you will have your request, because you asked according to God\u2019s will.\u00a0<span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\">That\u2019s why James is so confident. You pray the prayer of faith, and the Lord will heal the sick person, because healing is always God\u2019s will. Period. Once you settle the will of God concerning the issue, you will know that you have what you request. That\u2019s faith.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 It\u2019s interesting to see in contrast what James says here concerning a different issue (4:13-15):<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome now, you who say, \u201cToday or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit\u201d\u2014\u00a0yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring\u2026\u00a0Instead you ought to say, \u201cIf the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Why is this? Because there is no specific promise in Scripture that you will go to another city, spend a year there and make profit. The Lord promised to take care of you as His child, you can bank on that. That\u2019s a promise. You can pray for that in faith. But to make such a specific statement about trading, James calls arrogance: \u201cAs it is, you boast in your arrogance.\u201d (4:16).<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 If you ever wonder about what the will of God is concerning any practice or doctrine, look at Jesus\u2019 life. Has He done it? Has He lived it? If yes, then it\u2019s the will of God. Was He consistent in it, or was it just occasional, etc.? If you answer these questions in light of Jesus\u2019 life, you\u2019ll know what God would want done. The life of Jesus is the will of God revealed.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cLong ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets,\u00a0but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son \u2026 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature \u2026\u201d (Heb.1:1-3)<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is the image of the invisible God \u2026\u201d (Col.1:15)<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhoever has seen me (Jesus) has seen the Father.\u201d (John 14:9)<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Jesus always healed everyone consistently. That\u2019s a very strong message. This message screams: \u201cLook at my heavenly Father\u2019s nature! That\u2019s what He does.
